3 TIPS TO REMEMBER WHEN WORKING WITH YOUR ENTERTAINMENT

Hiring a DJ is a scary prospect for most people.

Here’s some great advice that can help.

On Sunday June 1st, 2014, our CPDJA President, Dave Hastings was asked to be a guest speaker at the Wedding Business Quick Start Seminar at the Ajax Convention Centre.

He was asked to create information that would help Wedding Planners work effectively with DJs to create a trouble-free event by combining their talents.

Here’s the information he presented. (This equally applies to couples when planning a wedding themselves without the use of a wedding planner)

3 Great Tips To Remember When Working With Your Entertainment

  1. Communicate!

When dealing with a Professional Disc Jockey, always remember that a great celebration always comes down to basic physics – “A body in motion tends to stay in motion – a body at rest will stay at rest”.

An outstanding event “flows”.

In most cases, your clients will judge the success or failure of a Disc Jockey’s performance by their ability to create a reaction and to keep the audience entertained.

If you start and stop – and stop and start an event, it takes twice the effort for your DJ to get the party energy back to where it was before it was stopped.

When you consider hiring a DJ, first make a list of everything you think needs to be handled from the time the Wedding Party and the Wedding couple arrives at the hall for their introductions.

Then ask your potential DJ how they would handle what’s on your list. DJ’s do much more than just play music and they should have the ability to create a plan with you that satisfies the needs of your clients while keeping their guests engaged in the celebration.

  1. Don’t “Under-Invest” In Your Entertainment!

Your Disc Jockey Can Make Or Break Your Event

When developing a budget for your client, always recommend that they invest approximately 10% of their funds into their entertainment.

Huffington Post recently posted that the average Canadian wedding budget is just over $32,000.00.

That works out to be just under $2700.00 per hour based upon a 12 hour day.

When Modern Bride Magazine polled wedding reception guests, they said the two most remembered items were the Bride’s gown – and the Disc Jockey Entertainment!

If your DJ doesn’t have the talent, music or experience to create a proper event flow and the guests go home at 10:00 pm, your client just wasted $8000.00 for the sake of trying to save a few hundred dollars on their entertainment. Most importantly, the life long memories of what could have been will last as long as they do.

  1. Include Your Disc Jockey

In Your List Of Vendor Meetings!

Once the guests arrive, your Disc Jockey is responsible for “driving” your event. An experienced Disc Jockey will work with you and your clients to create an effective plan that works. Your Disc Jockey also has a contractual obligation to their clients. Let them do the job they were hired to do. Work with them to create an event where everyone wins – and comes out smiling!
